Over the years I’ve seen startups spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on MVPs that were built for 100,000 users that had 0 users and 0 revenue. I’ve seen startups hire junior software developers and put them in charge of building the product. I’ve seen tech founders get so focussed on building the perfect tech stack that they forgot to check if anyone wanted the product in the first place. I’ve also made some of these mistakes myself!

I take a simple, pragmatic approach to product development that can be summed up in 3 dot points.

If they come, we will build it

The most crucial step in the startup journey is validating your idea. Before committing resources to software engineers, marketing, or office space, it is imperative to determine whether there is a genuine desire for your product and if people are willing to pay for it.

If it exists, we’ll use it

In most cases, your early stage tech startup shouldn’t need any custom software. It might sound like I’m talking myself out of a job, but so many ideas can be built with low-code/no-code platforms, and off the shelf content management systems. Custom software is for problems you don’t have yet, which brings me to my last point:

If it’s not a problem, don’t try to solve it

One problem that many tech startups have is solving problems that just don’t exist, or trying to solve them too early. This leads to waste: Wasted time, wasted focus, wasted energy that could all be better spent improving what your customers actually want.
